Shade, shelter, food and clean air. The trees within Birrarung Marr are a vital part of the ecosystem.

Currently, most of the biggest trees beside the river are Elms, an exotic species that drops its leaves each autumn.

To better reflect the original character of the Birrarung Marr landscape before colonisation,

City of Melbourne will add new plants, bringing more indigenous and native tree species to the Greenline journey.

We’re adding River Red Gums (which grow to be giants) to build the upper canopy layer.

Melaleucas will also provide shade and habitat for birds and other animals.

At the lower level, grasses and shrubs attract birds, bees and butterflies as well as providing cover for smaller birds like wrens who need protection from predators as the trees mature.
